Child Witness Group Program
It is estimated that one million children in Canada witness violence in the home. Witnessing violence can lead to significant behavioural, learning, physical, social and emotional difficulties. Children who witness violence are at risk for continuing the cycle of violence in their own lives when they grow up.
Women’s Resources runs groups for children who have witnessed violence in their homes.
In the safe and structured group environment, children are able to express their feelings about violence in their lives. Through role modeling and play, children learn healthy ways of resolving conflict and increasing their self-esteem.
Children, between the ages of 4 and 16 years, who have witnessed or experienced any type of abuse in their family, may participate in this program. Group sessions involve both boys and girls and groups are organized by age.
A support group for moms whose children are participating in the child witness group is also offered. The concepts taught in the children’s group are shared with moms so that they can be reinforced at home and moms learn strategies for parenting children who have witnessed violence.
